I know the reason posted has been the servers are past capacity with a large update, but this has been going on for more than 3 days?

As you know, Avira servers are under high utilization because of a large VDF update. Please read this announcement.

you can try manually updating antivir, which, incidentally, is what i did, when i also wasn't able to download the update.. here is a webpage with more information about manually updating antivir:
