Scheduled Tasks - Ask Toolbar Update

Hello all,

I would like to know if I can modify the scheduled task as to the update of the Ask Toolbar. As it is, it is set to check for updates every hour at one minute past each hour. I think this is excessive and would like to cut it down to once a week or so. If I modify this task will it have a negative impact on my Webguard Module or AntiVir Personal in general?

I guess if it's a necessary scheduled task, I can live with it, but once every hour just seems excessive to me.

Thank you for any help or insight you may provide.

Hi Elwood,

You can't do this via Avira but you can try to do it via creating a scheduled task in Windows XP. Btw., do you use any firewall?

Thanks for your reply, Farger.

I just didn't want to manipulate the scheduled task if it was going to mess up my AntiVir Webguard. I know how to do it though.

And yes, I use Outpost 6.5, free version as my firewall, I test as stealth everywhere I've tested. I have been considering changing my firewall though. Do you have any suggestions as to a good resource efficient firewall I might switch to?

Hi Elwood,

Maybe you didn't allow some Ask.com files in your firewall because if I don't allow them, my firewall notifies me about attempts from some ask.com files to establish connection...

I see in my firewall rules allowances for apnstub.exe, askpartnercobrandingtool.exe and updater.exe. I don't want to block these unless it won't hurt my webguard. I just want to cut down the number of times ask updater.exe can update itself. Hourly from 1:01 AM until forever just seems excessive. If it only wanted to update once a day or once a week it would be more reasonable.

Updater.exe, yes.

So I assume it is necessary for it to be allowed? Also, update.exe, but that is connected directly with the antivirus portion of the program, correct?

I guess it's not that big of a deal. It just seems excessive for it to check every hour from now on....

Hi Elwood,

I meant updater.exe, sorry. If it is completely allowed, it mustn't bother you with the frequent popup messages of your firewall.

No it's not a bother. It just seems excessive, but I can live with it. You may mark this thread as solved as it isn't really a problem for me. I just thought maybe in a future update it could be cut down to once a week or month or whatever rather than every hour.

Hi,

If it is allowed, it mustn't be so... Anyway, it is the more problem of Ask.com application...
