Avira 2012 service not working (update issue)

Using Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit. All current service packs with full updates. I have noticed from time to time that Avira 2012 will tell me there is a problem with update but usually a restart fixes it. However, this is the 3rd time restarting my system and Avira is still telling me I need to update definitions. Clicking "fix problem" does not solve the issue.

There is no problem at the moment. The last update was no. 145 of Friday 11th. You see that in red. If you check in reports you see should see that the last update was 145. During the weekend there are sometimes updates and it's possible that there is one later today. You can also check update number and date /tim on the site wwww.avira.com under VDF status. Hope this helps and come back with further questions if necessary. Furthermore I see that the firewall is switched off. Are you aware of that. It's a potential threat!

Hi mattdamonisdumb,

1) Please check the date / time in your computer. Could you please tell me whether they're right or not?
2) Please right-click on Avira's systray icon and click on About Avira Antivirus Premium 2012 > Version information tab > Right-click on Virus definition file, select Copy to clipboard and paste the content in your next reply.
3) Did you try to perform a manual update (VDF fusebundle)? What's the result?

@L. C. Kip
The user has installed Avira Antivirus Premium 2012 that doesn't have a Firewall module, so that module as well the Backup feature will appear grayed out.

p.s. Telling Avira 2012 to alert me if updates are out of date by two days instead of 1 seems to have fixed the problem. Originally, I instructed Avira to alert me if definitions have not been updated for a day.

Hi mattdamonisdumb,

This explain the issue. Avira Premium users will have an update job scheduled for every 2 hours, so the date of last update will appear at Avira Control Center, but it doesn't mean that among these updates was performed a VDF update. The option "Show notice if the virus definition file is out of date" applies only if the virus definition file (VDF) is not up-to-date. Usually, we don't have VDF updates during the weekend, so when choosing "1 day", you'll be notice that is outdated.

I think it might show more information in this regard as "Last successfully update: XX/XX/XXXX" and "Last VDF update: XX/XX/XXXX" with a Help link in Avira Control Center, explaining what this means and what to do in this situation. You can suggest that this may be improved to avoid this kind of mistake in the next versions here.

Anyway, your Avira will update every 2 hours (by default, unless you modify it) and choosing 2 days or 3 days in that option will solve your problem.

@phoenix747

Please open your own thread, reporting your issue (once your VDF is 7 days outdated), since this thread is already solved.
