Avira free for service pack 2

Can someone lead me to a place (if Any) where I can download a version of Avira free that works with Windows XP service pack 2. I won't go into why I don't have service pack 3. Any help is greatly appreciated...Thanks in advance...Zeph.

Hi Zephyrwind,

Avira Free Antivirus 2012 doesn't install in Windows XP SP2. Also, if you're using Windows XP SP2, you should be using Windows XP SP3. It is highly recommended you update to the latest Service Pack (SP3). This is an extremely important update which fixes several bugs and security issues that attackers exploit. The support for Windows XP SP2 by Microsoft ended July 13, 2010. Nowadays, Windows XP SP2 is really a big mistake. If you want to ignore all this and still thinks that will be protected in somehow by any antivirus using Windows XP SP2, then, you could use Avira Antivir Personal 10, downloading the product here.

My problem, for the moment is this laptop (7years old) only has 512mb of ram. Installing service pack 3 uses so much of it that it makes this machine do what the techs call paging.It makes the computer almost unusable function wise. All that being said, Will Avira personal 10 provide some amount of protection until I can afford to put more ram into this machine?? Thanks Marco for your response...Zeph.

Yes, I will also recommend a good firewall and a second layer of protection to you, but Windows XP SP2 will not protect you against a lot of bugs or system vulnerabilities.

What about Windows XP Professional x64?
I'm using Windows XP Professional 64-bit.
There is less security on SP2?

XP x64 is, despite of the name, not really XP but a modified version of Windows Server 2003 x64 for desktop use. The current service pack for this is SP2 (the same SP2 exe can be applied to both XP x64 and Win2003 x64, so you see how close this two products are). There is no SP3 for XP x64 and will never be, and SP2 is much newer on x64 than SP2 for XP 32bit and is still supported by Microsoft so no security problem with SP2 until MS support ends for it in 2014, see here
Avira system requirements also say SP3 at XP 32bit and SP2 at XP 64bit so it's supported.

So Marco what second layer of protection and firewall would you recommend to go with Avira 10??
