Tutorial for Avira Rescue CD

Hi everybody,

Here is a tutorial explaining how to create and use the Rescue CD.

Creation of the CD

Note : It is strongly advised to create Avira Rescue CD on a clean PC, not the PC on which you will run it.

1) Download the last version of Avira Rescue CD from here.

2) Insert a blank/rewritable CD/DVD your burning device.

3) Double-click on the rescue_system-common-en.exe icon. Confirm Windows security warning.

4) A window opens. If you use a rewritable CD/DVD, you will be asked if you wish to erase it. Click on Yes and wait that the procedure ends.





Your burning device must appear in the list. Choose it and click on Burn CD button to burn the Rescue CD. A message reports that the CD was well burnt.

Boot from the Rescue CD

1) Insert the CD that you have just burnt in your drive.

2) Restart your computer.
  • If the Rescue CD starts, go to step 3.
  • If Windows starts instead of the CD, you have to go to the boot menu to modify the boot sequence.
    Generally to go to the boot menu, you have to press Del key or F12 many times during the restart of your computer. Then, go to Boot tab and to Boot Device Priority to put the device in which the Rescue CD is, in first position. Save changes and exit the BIOS setup.


At restart, the computer will boot from the CD and a menu appears :


To start the AntiVir Rescue System, type 1 (Boot AntiVir Rescue System (default)) and press Enter to confirm.

Note :
  • If the Rescue CD does not work, disable floppy disk and try again.
  • If you encounter display problems when booting on the Rescue CD (wrong colours, cut image, ...), when the Rescue CD boot menu appears, type 5 and try all display mode until you find the right.

3) This windows will appear. By default, the selected language is German but you can choose English by clicking on the flag.



4) Click on Configuration and do the same as on this screenshot. It is essential to tick the options Try to repair infected files et Rename files, if they cannot be removed?.



5) Go to Virus scanner and click on Start scanner. The scan runs and the detected malwares are repaired or renamed if they cannot be repaired.





6) When the scan is finished, you can view the scan report by clicking on Information and then on Log-File.



Note : You can save the log file to your HDD, but it needs some Linux knowledge. Here's how you can do it:
  1. From the main menu, go to the console.
  2. Identify your HDD:
    • type ls /mnt (then press Enter) and you will see the list of all mounted drives. One of them should be your C: or D: drive in Windows. Usually it's /mnt/hda1, but it may be something else
    • type ls /mnt/hda1 or any directory within /mnt until you see the list of folders from your HDD. Then remember the successful command because that directory is where your HDD is mounted.
  3. copy the logfile:
    type cp /tmp/avlogfile /mnt/hda1/log.txt. This will copy the log file to C:\log.txt. In case your C drive is mounted to another directory, like /mnt/sda1 or /mnt/hda2, you should change the command accordingly.
To finish, click on Miscellaneous and Shutdown.



7) Boot on Windows normally. Run a full system scan with AntiVir to quarantine renamed files (.XXX extension)
