Strange ERROR on updating (An error occurred inside the WinINet library)

It updates fine, and is successful, but ever since upgrading to 9.0.0.403, I've started noticing errors in the update log. Is this an update server issue? Can anyone else reproduce this please:

Hi ssj100!

I can confirm this as being 'normal'.

With the new updater (9.0.0.49) Avira introduced connection attempts on IPv6 addresses. Considering that IPv6 adoption is still a slow process and most users won't have a fully functional IPv6 connectivity on their end, I find it a bit weird this hasn't been made optional. For me this has e.g. created problems with using an older proxy software that's unable to understand those IPv6 request. I strongly suggest Avira makes IPv6 at least an "opt-out" choice in the configuration...

What would be useful if someone could confirm that the update servers are faulty currently. The weird thing is that updating is fast and smooth...but it still gives these errors in the update log.

My bet is that there's something funny going on with the servers. It would be great if someone else could confirm that they are also getting these errors in their logs, despite smooth updating.

EDIT: Thanks NiteHawk for the confirmation!

So how can we make our connectivity more IPv6 compatible?

Hi,
I think you are using IPv6. This is not installed by default in Windows XP.
Please tell me if this procedure solves your problem.

Just tried that...it completely stuffed up my Avira's updating. It gets stuck on "Scan for updates..."

I would not recommend doing that!

Please re-read my post...I did do what you said mate and successfully installed IPv6. However, this made Avira's updating get stuck on "Scan for updates...".

Thanks for your help anyway.

With your problem being like mine (http://forum.avira.com/wbb/index.php?page=Thread&threadID=92385), it is confirmed a faulty implementation in Avira.
Since no IPv6 connectivity is found, program should try IPv4 then, instead of getting stuck with the first.

My goodness...Avira's updating process had already gotten a lot of bad press, and now this? I hope they fix things fast. I'm already looking for an alternative antivirus as we speak. Black-listing technology doesn't worry me too much, as I have nearly 100% prevention. Avira has excellent detection though (useful for detecting any malware for newly introduced files that I want to run on my real system), which is why I took the trouble to install it.

I hope Avira can fix this updating issue fast. It is a most excellent antivirus otherwise.

Hi,
Are you able to open http://[2a01:138:a001:201::23]/update/idx/master.idx in a browser? If not, you should not use IPv6.

You have no choice? AntiVir's updater v9.0.0.49 will try contact these URLs anyway...

Hi,
AntiVir updater is able to use both IPv4 and IPv6. These IP addresses are returned by the DNS server used by the customer, so I think this is a configuration issue.

Fine. Could you name the exact configuration that's needed, so the updater does not access IPv6 URLs (IPv4 only)? I'd like to avoid these, since my proxy software can't handle those requests (as mentioned above). And no, I don't have IPv6 installed on my XP SP3.

Hi ssj!

Quoted from "(via PM)"

How can I enable IPv6 for my system?

That's an obvious and simple enough question. The problem here: the answer is far from trivial. :| The process of IPv6 adoption is still in progress, so be prepared for 'some strings attached'...

Quoted

Please read here: http://www.overclock.net/computer-periph…rk-adaptor.html Do I need a network adaptor that supports IPv6? Do I need to change my ISP to one that supports IPv6? Is there something else? How can I know?

The first question you should ask yourself is: Do I need IPv6? ("Never change a running system.") If your internet connection works fine and does what you expect it to do, why change? On the other hand, there are valid reasons to have a closer look at IPv6, and if you're interested you might decide to try it out. http://www.ipv6actnow.org/, http://blog.windfluechter.net/index.php?…v6-Act-Now.html

It's not the network adaptor (physical layer) that needs to 'learn' IPv6, but the network layer (layer 3). This means: your network card doesn't matter, you need the IPv6 protocol installed. That step is easy to achieve: Nicolae already gave the procedure, here's another Microsoft link: http://www.microsoft.com/technet/network/ipv6/ipv6faq.mspx.

However, just adding the IPv6 protocol doesn't get you very far. What you now have is a 'link-local' connection, allowing you to (directly) contact other computers on the same network via IPv6. But a very important part is still missing: since there is no routing, you lack global connectivity, i.e. 'Internet access'... So, as you have already observed, adding the IPv6 protocol might actually 'make things worse' - as your PC now thinks it can use IPv6, it will happily try to do so, and fail.

This is where all sorts of problems arise. End-to-end IPv6 connectivity is not (yet) common for home users, and many ISPs will look at you with big eyes when inquiring to get it. If your ISP doesn't support IPv6, you'll have to start 'hacking' to use it - this basically means 'tunneling' IPv6 packets over an IPv4 connection. This is possible, but laborious (see e.g. 6over4, Teredo, IPv6 tunnel brokers). You'll have to ask yourself if it's worth the effort. Also, tunneling effectively means bypassing any firewall - so security concerns may arise.

I hope this answers some of your questions (and I'm sure it rises lots of new ones... :whistling: :D)
